Hi loves!
I had my first litter of chihuahua puppies earlier this year, and I was left stunned after publishing my advertisement. I got somewhere around 80 applicants and I would say 90% was gender specific in their letter. For some reason EVERYONE wanted a girl. I spoke to a lot of people in Chihuahua groups (yes, I’m that nerd, haha) and most people said girls only.
Who am I to judge, my first dog was a girl. But my girl was chosen out of chemistry and not because I strictly wanted a girl. I’m still really curious to know WHY people are obsessed with female puppies.
First thought to mind is the famous male-“lipstick”. I used to be grossed out about it, and just the thought of petting a male puppy on his belly was frightening. But after I bread my baby boy Calvin, and got used to having a boy and guess what, I quickly got over it. If you are considering adopting a dog, and you are unsure of which gender might suit you then here is my experience list with pros and cons.
FEMALE PROS:
♡ Less humping
♡ No indoor marking during puberty (males learn how to keep it outside)
♡ “Better” belly snuggle
♡ Usually smaller in size
FEMALE CONS:
♡ Blood stains EVERYWHERE during period every 6 months
♡ More likely to be stubborn and act like a brat (my experience with my own and friend’s dogs)
♡ Hormones give them a roller coaster ride + imaginary pregnancy
MALE PROS:
♡ By experience: more relaxed and snuggle bears
♡ Usually better quality coat
♡ Predominate in a number of sports, which might indicate that they are easier to train
♡ Usually bigger in size
MALE CONS:
♡ They usually howl if they smell a female in heat
♡ Possible wet after a wee (but you could trim his hair to avoid that)
I’m raising two puppies at the moment: one girl and one boy. So far my girl are much harder to train compared to my boy. But it could be a coincidence and not gender driven.
Is the lipstick really the dealbreaker? What are your thought on this?
Talk to you soon,
Florentina
